Acting in Competitions / Audition Settings

How do I become more expressive on stage in competition or audition situations. I’m great at acting when I have the set, the costumes, and the co-stars—but when it’s just me, the piano and the stage, I go into my “recitalist” mode and stand still for the most part. I feel very self-conscious, and can’t seem to commit to any movements. A big problem is knowing what kinds of movements are appropriate/allowed in such a setting. How much is too much?
Have any of you had this problem? What did you do to fix it?
